Goodbye sweet life in Florida

A last trip to Sanibel Causeway and our "shark cove"

Boating and seafood

The best time: Going out in the morning with the boat, the water is completely flat, the sky is clear, and you are almost alone on the water.

Boat trip to Fort Myers beach

We made another boat trip to the Gulf, this time going east to Fort Myers Beach, where we had been (going by car) the last time we were in Florida. Going out in the morning, the water lay flat like a mirror and it felt like we were flying over the water when we went out. We saw dolphins on the way.

We had a great day, swimming and fishing.

On our way to the Gulf we pass by a floating house where we could buy live bait (shrimp and Pinfish)

The Edison and Ford Estate

After the long and hot boat trip the previous day, we felt saturated with sun, and wanted to do something else. So, we decided to let the boat rest and went to the Edison and Ford estate on the Fort Myers side of the river. We had seen it from outside the last time we were in Florida, passing by on the long palm-lined McGregor Boulevard. Again, it was an extremely hot day and the heat felt like a slap in the face, when we got out of the car.

In the ticketing office, the guy behind the counter figured it would be cheaper for us to get a one year membership of the Edison estate than buying tickets for the whole family. So, we ended up getting a membership card and welcoming bag with lots of other discounts for entering museums around the US ;-).

First, we checked out the museum, showing a lot of different things, the great inventor Edison had been tinkering with, such as electric generators, phonographs, etc. There was also a couple of mounted Tarpons. Edison loved fishing and gardening - my kind of guy.

Being sickly already in his thirties, Edison was prescribed by his doctor, to spend the winters in the mild climate of Florida. He had the estate next to the river built, when there was basically nothing else around. The road next to the estate was a mere cattle road. He started by building a very long pier by which all the materials for building the houses could be brought in. He had two lovely houses built, one for himself and his family and one as a guest house (although also used by themselves). He also had the very long McGregor Boulevard lined with royal palms, now a signature of Fort Myers.

While in Florida, he started an experimental garden with the biggest project being the search for a plant source of rubber. He identified the weed Goldenrod as the most promising plant, having a high content of latex and being easy to cultivate.

Later, Ford, who was a close friend of the Edisons, bought the neighboring land and had a house built there.

Edison lived to be 84 years old, so being the first "snowbird" was apparently good for his health!

Boat trip to Sanibel Island

We went on a boat trip to Sanibel island. Having set the alarm clock to 7 am, we got an early start. We packed food and drinks in the cooler, and packed up swimming and fishing gear. At 8.30 am, we drove the boat out of our canal. The water slowly changed color as we went down the Caloosahatchee river, from black to blue/green. We saw dolphins on the way. Going under the Sanibel Island Causeway Bridge a good hour later, we arrived at the gulf. We cruised along the sandy beach on the south side of the island, carefully checking the water depth on the sonar and picked out a good spot for anchoring. Then we jumped in the water. It was fantastic, the water felt like warm, smooth velvet, and the sky was blue.

The sandy bottom was full of "sand dollars" which are flat, circular versions of starfish

We caught some silvery fish using shrimp as bait

Jumping in the water was very refreshing after fishing in the hot sun

Boat trip to the yacht club

We went on a boat trip to the nearby yacht club. It is a very nice public area with a sandy beach on the river, playground, fishing pier and the very good restaurant The Boathouse. The boat trip was very hot on the stretches with reduced speed (manatee area). When we could speed up, it was more fun and comfortable.
With the cooler filled up with cool drinks and snacks, we settled down on a picnic table in the shade by the sandy beach, then went in the water. I have never tried anything like it. The water is black and it actually feels hot, when you enter! When you get further out, you can find cooler water, which is actually what you want. After playing around in the water, Philip and I decided to get some live shrimp and go fishing on the pier.

Philip caught a lot of small catfish on the pier and I caught the first Stingray of my life. We took great care not to get stung.

Having lunch at The Boathouse. Hiroko and I had "Thai Shrimp" which was fresh shrimp in wonton dough, rolled with a bit of ginger and wasabi, deep fried. As a dipping sauce they served a Thai chili sauce with orange marmelade and lime, exquisite. We loved it and want to try to make it at home. The rest of the food was also excellent.

Coming home...

Yeah, that´s how it felt to reach the house in Cape Coral. The house is wonderful with all the amenities that makes life easy and comfortable. The house is incredibly well positioned at the end of a broad, quiet canal with a perfect view from the terrace/pool area and a wonderful pool.
Michael and me enjoying the pool.

Family fun in the pool. Being in the pool is the only way to stay comfortable in the sun as the temperatures are around 30-35 deg. C and the humidity is very high.

Philip has caught a lot of catfish by our own dock. Here, a nice evening picture.

Out in the boat. There was a lot to learn and a lot to keep in mind, to go safely out in the boat. But with GPS navigation, sonar, and sea charts, we were well equipped.

Party boat with load music and babes...

My evening exercise: The house has two kayaks and they are pretty good fitness toys. This evening Hiroko came along. You can go as long as you please on the endless labyrinth of canals and watch the incredible houses and boats some people have here.

Catfish (Philip's), shark (from the shop) and lobstertails on the grill. It was all very good, but especially the lobster developed a very nice flavor on the grill.

Michael still playing in the pool while I was grilling.

Orlando

Thursday 14.08

We left Savannah and headed for Orlando. The drive was long and hot. The traffic around Orlando is incredible. The roads around Lake Buena Vista, where our hotel was were constantly stuffed with cars. Our Radisson hotel was very stylish and we used the gym and pool in the evening. We also purchased tickets for Disney World "Hollywod Studios", which was the theme park that the kids chose.

Friday 15.08

Disney World - Hollywod Studios

The transportation to Disney World turned out to be rather long and complicated. Disney World has its own gigantic transportation system between the 4 theme parks it includes. There are buses, monorail and even boats that cross the artificial lake created on their grounds. We used a boat and a bus.

The boat ride to Hollywood Studios

Indiana Jones stuntman show in Hollywod Studios. The show was quite impressive with gigantic houses etc being moved by big trucks to change the scenery. It also involved a lot of fighting shooting, and explosions.

The Toy Story ride. We have tried it before, in Tokyo "Disney Sea". You are driven around in little capsules and have to shoot at screens with moving targets. I got the best score in the family!

There was a "Frozen" (after the movie) world where there was real snow to play in and a skating rink to skate in. Michael loved to play in the snow. Sometimes the simplest things are the best... They played Tyrolean music and we realized that they were trying to recreate something like Karlsplatz in Munich in the winter. We have the real thing at home!

The twilight zone tower of terror was a nasty ride. Michael had no reservations when we went there. We told him that it was going to be a scary ride but he definitely wanted to go. You are led into this house/tower and told a ghost story in the style of an old horror movie about people being taken into a new dimension by an elevator. Then you are put in the elevator, strapped down and the elevator starts to go up. It is dark and they continue to tell the story. All of a sudden the elevator drops and you are in a free fall and everyone screams. The elevator bounces up and down until you hardly know whether you are going up or down. Doors open up so you can see the outside park from high above in glimpses. Mai laughed hysterically. I turned to look at Michael when the lights came on again. He sat frozen still, looking terrified with a firm grip on the railing. Then, when he noticed me, a faint smile came on to his face. But he didn´t want to do the ride again...
The rock´n roller coaster. You are shot off and accelerate from 0 to 90 km/h in 2.8 seconds to loud Aerosmith music. Yeah, that´s a bit faster than my BMW. Then you are inverted and the train does all sorts of movements in the dark, and before you know it, the ride is over.

Hiroko in front of the Aerosmith Rock´n Roller Coaster.

We came home very late from the park and I went to get some pizza to go from a nearby pizzeria. I ended up getting a "deep dish" pizza, which is really more like a pie. We were all exhausted after the long day in the park and we looked forward to not having to get up early in the morning. We also looked forward to getting our house in Cape Coral after so many hotel nights.

16.08

We slept as long as we could, had some breakfast in the room and checked out of the hotel. It was a pretty short drive to Cape Coral (about 3 hours), so we wanted to go to one of the huge outlet shopping malls in Orlando before leaving. It was a very hot day and almost unbearable to walk around outside. As quickly as we could, we escaped into the blissfully airconditioned shops. Philip bought a skateboard, Mai and Hiroko some clothes, and I got Michael a Captain America shield that can shoot darts. Then we were off to Cape Coral. I was of course very tired so was almost falling a sleep behind the wheel. Some coffee helped me. We also tried the "gourmet" burger place "Five guys". It was good.
