Savannah, a city with a soul

Sunday 10.08

We arrived quite early in Savannah, as the drive from Augusta was only 2-3 hours. The hotel was, as expected, very nice. It was very hot outside, so the kids were actually reluctant to leave the hotel, when we said that it was time to explore the city. Our hotel was in the historic center, so we could just walk. We passed by old houses with character and a lot of squares planted with trees. We noticed some light green fluffy stuff hanging down from the branches of most trees (see picture below). It turned out to be an epiphyte (a plant living on another plant without being a parasite) called "Spanish moss" which is ubiquitous here in the south.

We were quite hungry and ended up having lunch at an Australian steakhouse. Hiroko and I both had "Great Barrier Trio" which was tuna sashimi, deep-fried prawns, and crab/avocado stack. It was delicious.

By the river Savannah we looked at different interesting shops. One was a sweets shop where one could see their production of "pralines" (based on pecan or peanut). Another nice shop had every imaginable product made with peanuts. You could sample all the different kinds of peanuts (with different spices such as "Bloody Mary", smoked this and that etc). They also had sweet variants with different kinds of chocolate coverings). We loved it (especially Michael who stuffed himself, taking care to avoid the spicy ones) and were very full when we left the shop. I bought a can of one of my favorites.

In the afternoon, we used the hotel gym and Michael was in the nice indoor pool for more than two hours. In the start, there were some very noisy and unruly girls in the pool, but that didn't bother him too much. He started to jump in the water (saying that he made "Arschbomben" - bad influence from his father, I guess).

In the evening we picked up pizza from a nearby restaurant. The kids preferred to stay in the hotel room, watch TV and eat pizza. Michael has developed a heart-felt love for a cheesy 80's TV-series called "Full house". I was writing on my blog. We had a good time.
