Fried on Tybee Island

Tuesday 12.08

As there was a clear blue sky, we decided to go to Savannah´s "house beach" on Tybee island. Crossing the Savannah river and other rivers, we arrived at the island after a short drive. The road followed a very long sandy beach, lined with hotels and shops selling beach toys, drinks etc. We parked by the pier and rented sunbeds and a parasol. Getting out of the car, it seemed impossible to enjoy the beach because of the heat, but once we dressed down to swimwear and sat by the beach, where there was a breeze, it was actually OK. The water was some of the warmest seawater I have tried. You just never got cold. Michael could stay and splash around in the small waves forever. We took great care not to get too much sun and using sunscreen, but still got pretty badly burned. Me: lobster red, Hiroko: red patches on the back, Philip dark brown with a slight shade of red, Michael: a very slight red, turning brown. Mai: didn´t feel so well that day so she stayed in the shade the whole time - no sunburn.

Plenty of space on the beach

In the evening we dumped the kids at the hotel and went out for fine dining in the historic "Olde Pink House" which houses a renown and acclaimed restaurant. We got a table in the bar and had some very good seafood along with a Riesling from Oregon. The wine did not taste like a German/French Riesling. It was very fruity, delicious before the food but lacked a bit in strength with the food. My scallops (kammuslinger) were incredible - I am going to experiment with scallops when we get the house in Florida.
